Large-Scale Kitchens on a Low Flame

With Large-Scale Kitchens on a Low Flame, Climate Alliance is breaking new ground and dedicating itself to climate protection in mass catering. Changing electricity suppliers, increasing the use of fresh, regional and seasonal produce and reducing the amount of meat used in menus are but a few of the ways in which canteens and cafeterias can lessen their environmental impacts. The project shares concrete suggestions in areas such as these with participating kitchens. An online tool determines savings potentials while graphically showing each kitchen’s progress and participants will receive ready-made campaign materials to support PR for their activities. With the goal of helping 100 large-scale kitchens in the Rhein-Main area surrounding Frankfurt to reduce their CO2 emissions by 40 percent, the lessons learned from this regional project have the potential for far reaching effects. The project is ideal both for local authorities with their own canteens as well as for those with good connections to canteens in their areas that are interested in reducing their environmental impacts.

Project funding period for pilot phase: January 2015 – December 2016.
Co-funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) as part of the German National Climate Protection Initiative.

City Transforming – on the tracks of new living and economic practices

Within the project City Transforming, which is funded by the German Federal Environment Ministry and the Federal Environment Agency, Climate Alliance and the Transition Initiatives in Germany jointly want to involve their respective target groups and networks in introducing the topics ‘sufficiency’ and ‘resilience’ in as many cities and municipalities as possible. Climate Alliance and the Transition Initiatives as well as five pilot cities and local groups will prove ways to establish a common understanding, to plan together and to create synergies. It should be clarified how local authorities can support existing and promote the creation of new initiatives. Key elements of City Transforming are guided walking tours, which will be exemplary tested in the pilot phase. The participating initiatives and local authorities will be supported in the areas of strategy development, public relations, communication and project management.

Climate Protection Planner

Climate Alliance is lead partner in a strategic project to develop a harmonized methodology for the preparation of emission inventories at local level in Germany. The outcome will be an internet-based tool which offers standardized modules for CO2 monitoring, analysis of local potentials for energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, development of scenarios and benchmarking. Project partners are the IFEU Institute and the Institute for Decentral Energy Technologies (IdE). The project is funded by the German National Climate Initiative.

Coaching Local Climate Protection
Within the scope of the “Coaching Kommunaler Klimaschutz” (Coaching municipal climate protection) project, particularly small and medium-sized municipalities were encouraged to get involved in structured climate protection activities by showcasing the experiences of advanced cities and municipalities.
The website offers tried-and-tested recommendations for action specifically for small and medium-sized municipalities, e.g. by means of the “(Durch)Starterpaket” (Starter package) that outlines worthwhile climate protection measures in eight fields of activity, which can be realised with little effort and yield results within a short period of time. The “Schnellkonzept Klimaschutz” (Fast-track climate protection concept) part module outlines how an inventory of climate protection activities within a municipality can be conducted, and how potential for further activities can be identified to systematically embed climate protection in municipal activities. The “Argumentationshilfe für kommunalen Klimaschutz” (Arguments for municipal climate protection) address typical objections to municipal climate protection and also offer ample background information.
In addition to the website, an individual consulting programme (coaching) by experienced municipal climate protection experts was developed and implemented in five pilot municipalities.

Previous Projects

Climate Protection Dialogue in Germany

Local authorities are a central pillar of the energy transition in Germany. In the beginning of 2013, the national Climate Protection Dialogue (“Klimaschutzdialog”) was established with the aim to initiate and accompany a process of mutual reflection and learning as well as networking and advice services. All relevant actors, from national institutions, local policy and administration to the various actors working on the implementation of climate change mitigating actions will be addressed. Concrete support action includes the development of training, workshop discussions and conferences as well as the organisation of a nation-wide day for local climate action. The consortium running this three-year dialogue process consists of adelphi, the German Institute for Urbanistics, Climate Alliance, IFEU Institute as well as Pestel Institute and Institute EBUS. The project is funded by the Ministry for Environment of Germany.

KlimaScout

To prepare municipalities for adaptation to the consequences of climate change, Climate Alliance was to begin developing guidelines in the second half of 2011 in the form of a web-based guide for municipalities and an emergency support kit to deal with extreme occurrences. The aim of the guidelines was to help cities and municipalities in the development of an adaptation strategy and in the initiation and implementation of local adaptation activities. The information contained in the guidelines are available as a Wiki within an internet-based tool. The aim was for volunteer authors to develop the guidelines. Particularly specialists from the over 450 German Climate Alliance municipalities were invited to actively participate.

"Climate Protection in Municipalities" guidelines
Together with the German Institute for Urbanism (Difu) and Heidelberg Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (ifeu), Climate Alliance developed the practical “Klimaschutz in Kommunen” (Climate protection in municipalities) guidelines, which should enable municipalities rapid entry into climate protection work and also create the conditions for continuation thereof.
These new guidelines are based on the 1997 guidelines that supported countless municipalities in the launch and implementation of local climate protection activities. The content and structure of the old guidelines were revised completely, and the new guidelines were made available in both print and digital (pdf) formats. The new guidelines also feature countless recent practical examples to copy or to encourage municipal climate protection activities.

Climate Toolbox
With its "Climate Toolbox" project the Climate Alliance provides local authorities in Germany with tools that they can use to initiate and realize campaigns on specific topics and aimed at specific target groups; the Toolbox also suggests way of involving the relevant population groups and players in local climate mitigation activities. The Toolbox provides appropriately tailored information and campaign plans, including text, printing and design templates that can be easily adapted by the local authority or used as they are. The suggestions can be selected, combined and used in ways that reflect the event taking place in the town or district.

LocalEnergy - Intelligent Energy Use in Cities and Municipalities
Intelligent energy use in cities and municipalities serves climate protection, spares the local household and prepares for the power supply in the future. In the project supported by the German Federal Environment Ministry and the German Federal Environment Agency the Climate Alliance developed together with the environmental organisation Deutsche Umwelthilfe two offers for cities and municipalities. Above all for local energy experts and respectively environmental officers an internet-based data base with more than 400 concrete and exemplary measures and projects on the intelligent use of energy was created. It should support the exchange between cities and municipalities by a new advisory service system. Thereby each advice was honoured with one point by the local authority that had realised a successful project, in order to increase the motivation for advices on the working level. Five regional workshops on the topics local energy standards, energetic refurbishment of buildings and energy optimised urban land use planning referred directly to local decision makers in politics and administrations.
